Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

I Vant To Suck Your Blood!

Ok, so I’ll admit it... I am a twi-hard Twilight fan. I love the whole Vampire thing, which I thought would mean I would love True Blood. However, I just can’t seem to get into it. I don’t know if its the horrible accents or what, but its just not my cup of blood tea. Although I thought all hope was lost for vampire television, I decided to give the new ABC series, The Gates, a biting fighting chance. I’m pleased to say, after only two episodes, my blood-thirsty desire for good vampire television show is quenched!

I am not familiar with many of the actors on the show, but by the looks of it, it seems to be cast quite well. So far, my favorite character is Claire Radcliff, played by Rhona Mitra. You might have seen her in Doomsday, The Number 23, Boston Legal, or The Practice. She plays a vampire, that can’t seem to control her need for blood, which already has gotten her in a lot of trouble. In my opinion, she really looks like what a vampire would look like, and plays the troubled role very well. Her husband, Dylan Radcliff, played by Luke Malby (The Prince and Me / 28 Days Later) has been revealed to be the reason Claire is now a Vampire. He often gets angry with his wife for sucking the life out of many of the innocent people she meets. In my opinion, Claire’s best line to him so far is, “You always blame me. You never take responsibility. Never. You did this to me. You made me who I am.” You tell him, girl!

Just by watching Twilight, I am familiar with the rules of the Vampires and Wolves, but, The Gates has introduced a few new types of characters to the magical world. There have also revealed that the town has witches. I can’t be sure yet, but, I think that Peg Mueller, played by Victoria Platt (CSI and Guiding Light), the town’s physician, and Devon, played by Chandra West (NYPD Blue and 90210), the owner of The Gates Day Spa, are both witches. They seem to have some kind of control over people and can make people forget things with their remedies.

Nick Monohan, played by Frank Grillo (Minority Report and The Sweetest Thing), and his wife Sara Monohan, played by Marisol Nichols (Cold Case and Nip/Tuck), have just moved their family into The Gates. Nick is the new Chief of Police in town, and has already begun to notice something odd about this neighborhood. Clearly, the vampires, warewolves, and witches are not taking kindly to his snoopy interigations, for fear that they might be found out.

Already in this series, there is so much drama and lots of things to learn. I can’t wait to figure out all of the mysteries the small town of The Gates holds! Check out "What You Find Beyond The Gates!"
