Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

All In For Alex Wong

If I were a betting woman, I would put all of my money on Alex Wong to be the winner of this year’s So You Think You Can Dance! While I believe this season’s crew to be the best yet, no one’s talent compares to that of Alex Wong.

Alex Dustin King Wei Wong, nicknamed Wong Wong, Wongy, Wongaroni, is a Canadian born dancing genius! He started practicing ballet when he was only 7 1/2 which led him to a career at the Miami City Ballet. Here is a clip of one of the dances he did with the company...

He gave up his position with the Miami City Ballet to be on So You Think You Can Dance. Good Choice!!! When asked what he hopes to gain from this experience, he answers, “Personal accomplishment of making a mark in this dance world and inspiring other dancers and people.” I’m no dancer, but Alex Wong- you have inspired me! I get chills each week from watching him do what he was so meant to do!

I know I am not the only one that thinks so highly of him! Each week he has gotten standing ovations from all of the judges! Although he is trained in ballet, he has proven himself to be unbelievably versatile. The first week he danced in the style of Broadway, the second week, contemporary. Each time he exceeded the choreographer’s, judge’s, and audience’s expectations.

When he was asked, “What style do you hope to pick out of the hat? Which style of dance are you afraid to get?” he answered, “I hope to pick out...maybe...Ballet? Haha I am afraid to get Hip Hop & Ballroom.” Well this week his fears came true when he picked Twitch, one of the top Hip Hop dancer’s in the world, out of the hat to dance with. He was forced to do a hip hop dance under the Choreography of Tabitha and Napoleon D'uomo. I thought he would be doomed and this perfect dancer would fall from the top spot. I was SO wrong! Here is his performance to “Out Of Your Mind”...

He clearly proved me and the rest of America wrong by blowing us away with this dance! The judges, once again, gave him a standing ovation and said that the roar from the crowd was the loudest they had ever heard in So You Think You Can Dance history! He kept up with Twitch, and looked nothing like a ballet dancer! He looked even better than Jose Ruiz, the contestant that has been trained as a hip hop dancer. I don’t know much about dance, but I know I have never seen a contestant make it seem so easy to switch between dance styles!

Alex also performed a solo dance this last episode in his own ballet style. My sister grew up as a ballet dancer and I always heard her talking about “lines” but I didn’t know what this meant until watching him dance. He can make his body go into positions and extensions that I did not think were possible! There is no doubt he is the best dancer on the show, I just hope America votes for him to be the winner of So You Think You Can Dance. After a hip hop / ballet performance followed by a standing ovation from the judges and the crowd like on this last episode, I doubt there will even be a close second!

  1. I am also a big supporter of Alex. Each week he just continues to blow my mind with what he is capable of doing. Its interesting how the more technically trained dancers can adapt to different styles very easily. Some of the dancers who are trained in Ballet seem like they can just jump into other styles, while some of the hip hop people find it difficult to dance more classically.
