Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

6,000 Girl Scouts Invasion

I officially love Ace of Cakes! Ever since the shows launch in 2006, I have casually watched episodes but have never been a continual follower. When I was flipping through the channels, I clicked on the Food Network to the show; it was on an episode repeat, so I decided to go to the website and check out if it was just like the show or it had more to offer.

It so happens there is so much more on the website that can make you love the show even more. Especially little clips of some of their most awesome/fun cakes. This is the first show that I actually got more hooked on just by looking at their website. You can look at the background of the show, Duff’s (the host’s) history, look at various clips about all the crazy-wicked cakes they make, and all sorts of extra’s, even what they have in their actual store. I wonder how many other people get more addicted to the show through the website.

The one clip that I especially liked was the episode where they got to make a cake for a Girl Scout convention. At one point in the clip Duff says, “one minute we were alone and the next we were invaded by 6,000 girl scouts!” Seriously, that’s not a troop meeting, that’s an entire army of green vested, beret wearing, cookie sellers and their mothers. DAMN!

Being a Girl Scout at one point in my life(shout out to troop 484), it would have been my dream come true to have a cake made out of all my favorite Girl Scout cookies and I know it would be to a lot of other people as well. Just imagine a beautiful three tiered cake, each layer topped with a different cookie such as the famous Thin Mints, Do-Si-Dos, and Trefoils (shortbread). To watch the clip follow the link:

The show is awesome, but I think the website keeps people interested. There are behind the scenes video clips and clips of the team goofing on each other. I like that the viewer is able to get behind the actual show and see how they make the cakes but also how they have fun doing it. It is so clear they love what they do and they love each other. To me, the website brings in more of the family aspect and we get to see the interaction between everyone who works at the shop and on the show. The cakes are ridiculous and look awesome. When you visit the website, the clips allow you to search through the episode guide and watch how they made the cake in less time than the actual show. It’s convenient but it also makes me more intrigued to watch the full episode. Hopefully you are already addicted to the show but if not visit the website and see what you think. You can have your cake and eat it too! Enjoy!

  1. As an art major, these shows always catch my attention. The things they can make into a cake, and have it still be edible is unbelievable to me. These people are true artists with so much talent! I have tried to bake, after being inspired by these types of shows... but let me tell you- its a lot harder than it looks! I think I'll leave the baking up to them, but I can appreciate their work so much more now!
