Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

Extreme Poodles...WTF?

I think TLC has hit a new all time low. Yes, we finally have a show about a grooming poodle competition. What more could we ask for?

The other night I was up in my room and decided to go downstairs and get a snack. When I came down my roommate was watching this random show. As I glanced at the TV I saw a bright pink furry blonde with a bad dye job, an extremely hairy mess with blue and blonde streaks...and those weren't even the poodles!

This show has to be one of the worst ideas TLC has ever had. If you thought Toddlers & Tiaras was bad, wait till you watch this show. I don’t know who I feel the most sorry for, the dogs or the groomers. The dogs are dyed, cut and shaped into the weirdest things you can think of. One had an Indian theme; he was a buffalo with an Indian headdress and an Indian chief’s face sprayed on one side. Another was a big furry lion, mane and tail included. And if that’s not bad enough just wait till you see the actual showing of the dogs.

The dogs have a theme and apparently so must the entire presenting team. At least three or four people are up on stage in costume with sets. These people go full out. They have stage props or settings along with music and bonus for us they dance! One of the ones which disturbed me the most was the woman who made her poodle into a camel. She had the Middle Eastern music and desert background, complete with her and two other people belly dancing. And I hate to say it but boy did this woman have a belly! Another one involved the reenactment the Adam and Eve sequence, where their little toy poodle was groomed to be the bright green snake.

I can’t imagine what possessed TLC to air a show like this but what really shocks me is there are actual people who go to these competitions and are honestly entertained by this! Come on now, this is just too damn ridiculous!

  1. I think it’s funny that TLC, the supposed learning channel, is putting crap like this on television; stuff that might actually de-evolve us as a species. It is really interesting though to think about how there must be a fairly large network of people who actually enjoy and take part in this type of hobby. I does appear to be more of a female dominated leisure activity (or would poodle grooming be considered a sport?). This might be due to the fact that some of these women might not have kids of their own to creatively interact with. Only time will tell if this show will remain on air...that poor dog/camel hybrid sure does look sad though.

  2. I know! Isn't it just sad that people find that kind of stuff fun to watch or go to? I feel a little ridiculous for even watching the show as long as I did. And I would agree with you about the possible maternal cravings but I did see some guys there and even ones who participated in the showings! Oh and ya, that dog looks pretty sad or you know he's probably thinking f-my life, ha!

  3. I am really really sad to see that people do this to animals...and I'm not even for animal rights... A friend of mine posted one of these pictures on my facebook wall and I could not believe this was an actual show. I guess after "Toddler and Tiaras," you can flip to this show and get another fix of primping, grooming, and overkill of makeup.

  4. This is so ridiculous! I have never seen this show, but I agree that it is definitely a new low for TLC. I recently tried to shave my dog since it's been so hot, but the clippers broke half way through the job... He was half fluffy Chow and half shaved black lab-ish for a day or two and I felt pretty bad for the little guy. I can't imagine what the poor animals must think living their life looking like a camel or a liger, the poor things are probably thinking that their owners have too much free time. And I agree completely.

  5. Those pictures have got to be some of the funniest things I have ever seen. These people obviously have way too much time on their hands and spend most of that with their animals. Placed in a daytime slot I think this show will get higher than expected ratings, if for nothing else but how damn ridiculous these people are

  6. WOW. That's pretty much all that I can say at this point. TLC, man, where did they go wrong?

Maybe these people on this show took a wrong turn on the "loving your pet" road.

  7. I really dont know what to say. This sounds ridiculous, its bad enough that there are people out there that take part in this, but now they are making a tv show out of, come on -- enough is enough. I feel bad for the dogs, who dont have a choice but be made into these ridiculous paradies of other animals for their owners enjoyment, I think dressing dogs in t shirts and clothes is bad enough, but this is on a whole new level.
On a side note, it was refreshing to read a blog that actually spoke negatively about a show rather than praising it. It was a nice change of pace.

  8. I don't think it's a series, I think it was a one-time documentary. My boyfriend and I have a miniature poodle and we got a huge kick out of watching this! Though the people are obviously insane.

It does make Best in Show (one of the funniest movies ever) seem a little bit less like a satire, though :-)
