Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

Conquer this

A giant sling shot across a river and a HUGE slide in Utah, a giant rotating speeding pendulum and some of the scariest roller coasters in the Ohio area.

That was all in the first hour of Travel Channel's newest show, Bert the Conqueror, which premiered after Man v. Food, one of the networks more famous shows last Wednesday night. The show follows Bert as he goes around to different areas of America and finds local culture and local thrills.

Bert is a 36 year old dude that is a little funny. And by a little funny I mean the way he was screaming on some of these roller coasters brought tears to my eyes from laughing too much. Not only was Bert screaming so much, but its almost as if he lacks a filter. He just spouts off whatever comes to his mind while on these rides. In these rants he could scream for his mommy like a 7 year old girl, or he could ask to hold hands with his neighbor "Do you wanna hold hands? I don't care!" The quirky aspects of Bert also come out even while he is asking for the history of the place and looking towards the staff on the safety and security of the individual rides when he begins to have an apprehension.

In the second half hour episode of the show, Bert takes on a challenge to ride 4 of the scariest coasters in Ceder Point amusement park in Ohio in only one hour. The almost half mile walk between coasters as well as the wait in line time count in the one hour. Thankfully for Bert, the only two people to complete the challenge were children and every adult in the park that day was on Bert's team and he barely had to wait in line.

This show is going to be a major hit and something quite addictive after your first viewing. It has a little something for everyone in the family. A little culture, history and travel planning help for the parents and a whole lot of laughter and adrenaline rushes for the kids. Next week's episode is taking us to Las Vegas with a teaser that Bert could be bungee jumping OFF one of the hotels on the strip. I know I'll be tuning in next Wednesday at midnight!

Here are a couple clips of the coasters Bert conquered this last week.
