Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

Hung Up On HUNG

What do you do when you’re short on cash, but well endowed? Work with what you’ve got! Desperate times call for desperate measures and Ray Drecker’s measurements measures are all he’s got! This season on Hung, it seems to be that Ray is working HARDer than ever on his male prostitution business. He is desperately trying to rebuild his burnt down house so that his children can come back to live with him. However, as a struggling high school baseball coach, his wallet seems to be waning.

Season two just premiered with the first episode, “Just The Tip” and I’m already hooked, or rather HUNG up! As always, Ray has to meet up and “perform” for all sorts of women. This week, he found himself with a pregnant lady. We watched him uncomfortably play “just the tip” with her, while the pregnant client seemed to be very unpleased. He later says to his “pimps”, Tanya and Lenore, that he is afraid he will hurt the baby due to his BIG eehhhemm. (This reminded me of the scene in Knocked Up- Men just don’t get it, which I guess is sad for the pregnant women, but hysterical to watch!)

So, Ray tries again at the second appointment and pictures himself and his once pregnant, now ex wife, while in the sack. The client was more than pleased this time and Ray’s confidence in his BUSINESS (yes, pun intended) is restored.

The show is brilliant from the beginning to end. The opening theme song is one of my favorites on television. The song is amazing, I’ll Be Your Man by The Black Keys and I know its hard to keep your eyes off HOT Thomas Jane (Ray), but, watch for the clever sexual innuendos too! Check it out and tell me you’re not intrigued!

What I’m hoping for this season? Well, one can only guess what kinds of women he’ll run into. But, I hope that he finally has an appointment with his ex wife. They are clearly still in love with each other. It almost happened last season, but Ray decided not to reveal his secret to her just yet. She could use something hot and heavy due to her nerdy husband’s lack of, well, everything but money. The only things that he can offer are tangible, while Ray could offer her something much LARGER. This would change both of their problems because she could pay him enough to get his house fixed for making her more... satisfied!

  1. I too, am a fan of Hung...Im not really sure why though. Its not overly funny, or overly dramatic, but I still watch. Maybe it is just HBO's creativity and how the show is put together. Maybe it is because it is just too easy to root for Ray - a recently divorced man, whos house is ruined and his job is up in the air. Its this sort of underdog story and something very new in general. It takes a twist on the typical pimp, ho relationship and has the male being pimped -- which is pretty interesting to watch, not to mention his pimp is about all harmless looking as possible. Overall, that is why I think people are drawn to this show: today shows seem to mirror each other from network to network, but this show is truely an original idea and that is refreshing.
