Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

'Chelsea Lately' - Your life will be better if you watch this show

Chelsea Handler (with the stage name ‘Lately’) is a hysterical comedian with a nighttime celebrity gossip show on E!. I absolutely love Chelsea Handler and watch her show as often as possible. In the first segment of her show, she and three other comedians discuss the latest celebrity gossip. Chelsea will bring up a topic she reads off a note card (because she clearly wouldn’t know any of this crap off hand) and then she and the three other people will make fun of the celebrity and whatever he/she did to make the news. It’s all improv comedy and it never fails to make me laugh even when I’m alone in my living room. They do this with various stories for about ten minutes and it’s always so funny because you can tell Chelsea doesn’t see herself as a celebrity and she doesn’t take any celebrity drama seriously. Plus she is completely outspoken and doesn’t care at all what people think of her and is willing to do or say pretty much anything. Tonight she discussed Al Gore’s sex life and how boring it must be which was accompanied with her personal imitation of Gore in bed: “Would you like to see my inconvenient hard-on?” Case and point.

After she makes fun of other people’s over-glamorized problems, she interviews a celebrity. Tonight we had the pleasure of watching her interview with Lil Jon aka “The King of Crunk.” She questions him on his “grill,” thinking it could be his retainer. Also she has him explain “crunk” and why he likes cats so much (due to a choice word he uses in his songs).

Also, she loves midgets and loves talking about them. She has a little-person sidekick, Chuy. He sits on the side of the set during the whole show and occasionally Chelsea will ask him a question and laugh hysterically, no matter what he says.

Chelsea isn’t afraid to talk about sex, drugs, drinking, race, or mental/physical handicaps and for that reason and so many more, her show is hilarious. So basically, if you aren’t watching Chelsea Lately, you aren’t living. Watch it once and I promise you’ll love it.

  1. I am not a devoted fan but I do catch her show every once in while and love it! She always gives me a little giggle before I go to bed! Some of her shows are better than others but it's still really funny. I do like how she isn't afraid to talk about really any issue or celebrity, it makes for a much more interesting show than just informing about the gossip aka E! News.

  2. Chelsea Handler is hilarious. Her books, "My Horizontal Life," and "Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea," will have any reader cracking up as she talks about her deranged father and her sex-capades. As a talk show host, I really enjoy her snide remarks about celebrities, especially her favorite target, Lindsay Lohan.

  3. I watched a few episodes of Chelsea Lately after a friend turned me on to it, and I have to agree that her talk show is very unique. Chelsea is very witty in her ways and it makes for very interesting interviews and commentary. She is definitely not afraid to make fun at any of her guests, which in a politically correct world like today, is a great thing. The ability to say what's on her mind gives the show a different direction then many other late night shows and I think it will give Chelsea a lot of staying power.
