Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

Burned Royally

Every Thursday at 8:00 and 9:00 I get Burned, Royally…and it’s so good! This summer two of my favorite shows, Burn Notice and Royal Pains are back to back on USA for another explosively sexy and entertaining set. I can now sit for two hours and pleasantly fill my need for a sexy Miami spy and my semi-piro desires to see big explosions and incredibly illegal activity. Along with fulfilling mine, and my mother’s, dreams of seeing a charming doctor in the Hamptons, who can save my life any day of the week.

I will share my top three reasons why I love and watch each of these shows:

Burn Notice

1. One Mr. Michael Westen-

Badass ex-spy, skilled weapons aficionado with a specialty in all around shenanigans

He is sexy, kickass, and is like the modern day Robin Hood of Miami…except he has a lot more fire power. His character has turned a little darker in the third season and so far the majority of us who watch the show like it.

2. The Narration-

Half the allure of the show is how we, as the audience, are constantly being tutored in the ways of awesome spyness. Every show Michael makes us feel like he is personally training us; we are a part of the team.

3. “The Team”-

Michael of course. Fiona, his trigger-happy ex-girlfriend, who specializes in the making/detonating of the many homemade bombs used in their various jobs. Her character has stayed somewhat the same; still wants Michael to commit and loves her weapons. And Sam, the ex-seal who still has connections but is also one of Michael’s best friends. He’s got a beer in one hand, a gun in the other, and always ready to back Michael up in any situation; which definitely comes in handy especially in this week’s episode.

This season is the best yet. We found out who burned Michael and now they want his help but the twist is when he decides to help them he learns he has just burned another spy! Added to the cast is this newly burned spy (Jesse Porter) HELLO Coby Bell! I can tell he is going to bring the shows plot to the next level.

Royal Pains

1. It’s not just another doctor drama-

I think it’s unique because of how the show is set up. The storyline changes almost every episode, so it keeps you guessing. It deals with intimate relationships but the storyline follows the two brothers; which is quite refreshing. Hank is an awesome character and does things that Macgyver would be proud of. Some of the episodes are more extreme. In the newest season, when Evan and Divya were on a boat and the mast hit the captain in his chest, he had to instruct them how to jimmy-rig a pulley and lever system with fishing hooks to lift a guy’s rib cage off his lung from a computer video conference.

2. Evan and Divya-

Evan is an eccentric jackass but you gotta love him. His get rich quick schemes or methods to enhance Hank Med are just ridiculous. Divya is a rich Indian family’s daughter who ever since the first episode is Hanks medical assistant. Her and Evan’s witty banter makes my day. And now in the current season we are getting to see a little more of her love life; which is interesting because she is engaged to her best friend through an arranged marriage.

3. Character development-

The show is really good at letting the characters grow by themselves and not try to force too many story lines. This season is one of my favorites because we get to see and know more about the infamous father; who is actually played by THE FANZ!

I am interested to see where both these shows go. Hopefully you’ve already caught a bit of the fever and will have to have the doctor check you out as soon as possible ;-)

  1. I like Burn Notice a lot too! I have to say that I don't think that the acting is very impressive, but I still like the characters and the whole idea behind the show. I like that you can tune in to almost any episode and not feel completely lost. Good show, and great blog!

  2. I know, I feel like the cast's acting could be just a tad bit better but the characters are pretty unique. And I agree with you about tuning in and not feeling lost. I really do love the new twist they are starting to add to the plot! Have you seen the latest episode?
