Despite observations that we are currently experiencing the ‘death of TV’, television shows no sign of giving up the ghost to newer media. The ubiquitous presence of TV—in our living rooms, bedrooms, and even kitchens—demands critical attention. This class will use a variety of approaches to assess the material, rhetorical, and cultural impact of a medium that many people seem eager to dismiss. But is it? Why do people continue to tune in? How has television adapted to the new media environment? What does the future of TV look like? This blog will consider all these questions and more.

BLOG PORTFOLIO AND REFLECTION

On Friday, July 2, your “blog portfolio” will be due. I strongly suggest that you revise each of your blogs—especially the early blogs—using our class discussions as guidelines. Generally, because blogs are so topical and timely, revision doesn’t occur after they are posted. BUT, this is a writing class and you have become a better blogger in these 5 weeks; ideally, you will use that knowledge to submit the best blogs possible. Instead of printing them out, I will simply go through and read each of your blogs, which will be graded holistically. Make sure they are revised by midnight, Friday.

You will also need to write and post a 6th blog, which will be your reflection. I’d like you to reflect on your own growth as a blogger. What was difficult for you? What did you enjoy? What kind of revisions did you make? How is blogging different than the type of writing you usually do? How has it affected your engagement with television? How has your thinking about TV changed throughout the course of the semester? Take your time and reflect thoughtfully on your progress as a writer, thinker, and blogger. Use specific details from your writing to support the claims you make. The reflection should be engaging and detailed—and about 2-3 pages (double-spaced).
